The Next Big Thing: Meet Laolu

So a friend of mine Laolu, although majors in Mass communication  in the University of Lagos, has always had music on his mind for as long as I can remember. The drive? I never knew, but curious me wanted to know more about Laolu .

It wasn’t your ideal interview, I mean we had talked about having an interview but this particular day just seemed perfect . Although, “our next big thing” was feeling a little under the weather, he wanted to have the interview. And so over a cup of coffee I got to know a little more about  Laolu. So please sit back, and enjoy our little chat…

Full name :  Aromolate Olaoluwa

Stage name : Laolu

Since when have you had an interest in music ?

Growing up I developed so much interest in music, being that my Mum was a chorister. I remember tagging along whenever she went for choir rehearsals. Basically I started consuming music from a very young age.  I had uncles that  were really young and loved music. And they had music decks and they would play different songs , which later on had a great effect on me.

When I was four, I developed interest in playing the recorder, the drums and the guitar. Sadly, I never played the guitar and I still don’t know how to play the guitar. My Mum killed that interest in me, cause I was stubborn. I remember she broke my guitar on my head once. (Laughs) So by age 7, I started playing the keyboard and by age 11 I became very good at it. And I would play the keyboard at church concerts and programmes. When I was in secondary school, I got a scholarship for miming 2face’s “African Queen” . And so for half of my stay in secondary school I didn’t pay fees. And suddenly, my interest grew from just playing the keyboard to producing music.

Who is your mentor in the music world. In Nigeria and globally ?

I have drawn inspiration from a wide range of musicians. At a point in my life I used to rap, cause I liked Eminem. But for me 2face is the real deal, am a huge fan and sometimes I look for ways not to like him, but I can’t help it . But presently my idol is Wizkid, he has really grown in the music industry.

Are you versatile when it comes to music ?

Funny enough, I look up to bands like “the Beatles” and “Coldplay”. I like Ed sheeran, I have a very universal taste in music, so am not stereotype when it comes to music.

Do you listen to any type of  music that appeals to you or do you have a specific genre that you go for ?

Music they say ” is a universal language ” and so regardless of what your nationality or taste in music is, if it sounds good and beat moves you definitely you would like it. When “Gangnam style” dropped I bet 95% of the people who love that song didn’t  understand what the guy was saying, but we all love the song.  I listen to every song that appeals to me.

What do you feel are your major limitations ?

What I learnt from Ernest Hemingway was that  ” life is full of hurdles, and you have to keep jumping from one to the other “.  My major fear at first was how to get my songs recorded and how to get someone to believe in me. That problem got solved . But the major obstacle that I believe most upcoming artist face today is ” having to get your song out there” it is very very difficult. It is very difficult to convince someone to download your songs. These days everybody is a musician, you keep getting BC’s on whatsapp and on BBM to download a particular person’s song. And because of that even when the good songs come along people just overlook it. So getting your song out there is really a challenge.

Are you on the lookout for record labels?

Actually, am on the Lookout for record labels. Most especially STAR BOY -Wiz kid’s record label.

How do you combine music with school?

Basically I have boundaries, more often than before I record mostly during the holidays and sometimes on weekends. So music doesn’t interfere with my studies, at least not yet ( smiles ) I know for sure that when things get bigger and more opportunities show up, it will definitely interfere but luckily for me am not a dull student. So it might interfere but not to an overwhelming point.

What’s the next big thing?

Everything is big, but then you should look out for my videos “shaba” and “forever”. Considering the fact that some people prefer “shaba” and some “forever” , So I figured I might just drop both videos.
